Why agent capability should be owned, not rented

Models and services can be rented. The resident's identity, memory, permissions, and durable working environment should not disappear when one provider changes the terms.

A persistent agent can depend on outside models and still belong to its owner. The durable parts of the relationship should live in an environment the person controls: identity, memory, goals, accounts, permissions, evidence, and the option to move.

Ownership means
  • The resident survives a model or subscription change.
  • Data and memory have an exportable, governed home.
  • Authority can be revoked without asking a model provider to erase the whole identity.
  • Local, cloud, and hybrid resources remain choices rather than definitions of the agent.

A subscription is not a resident

Cloud services make powerful models accessible and will remain an important part of the computing stack. The problem begins when the service boundary is also the identity boundary. Then the agent's memory, behavior, integrations, and history can become inseparable from one vendor account.

If the provider changes a model, removes a feature, limits an integration, or closes an account, the user may lose more than a tool. They can lose the continuity of the relationship and the accumulated structure around their work.

Renting computation is ordinary. Renting the entire existence of the resident is a deeper dependency.

Own the durable layer

Ownership does not require every inference to happen offline or every component to be open source. It means the stable system remains under the user's control while outside services compete to provide replaceable capabilities.

The user should be able to preserve the resident's identity and memory, inspect its permissions, export its artifacts, change a model provider, and choose where the system runs. The operating system is the natural place for that durable layer because it governs resources beneath applications and models.

Use the best available model. Do not let the model own the agent.

This is why ERIKA treats models as bounded cognition providers. They receive selected context and authority for a task. The operating system retains the resident's state and decides what survives after the call ends.

Physical ownership makes the idea visible

A local machine is not the only way to create ownership, but it makes the boundary tangible. The ERIKA computer gives one resident a specific body that can sit in a home or workplace. A person can connect it, disconnect it, move it, or replace it.

Cloud and virtual deployments should preserve the same logical ownership model. The resident should not become a different kind of identity merely because its compute moved. Hardware is one surface. The operating system is the continuity.

Real ownership also includes responsibility. A system with access to accounts and tools needs updates, recovery, permission review, and clear evidence. The point is not to eliminate governance. It is to put governance in the hands of the person or organization that owns the work.

The end state is not isolation from every service. It is leverage. Models can improve, providers can compete, hardware can change, and the resident can continue without being rebuilt from zero each time.
