
The case for a monitorless AI computer
When the resident is an AI agent, the monitor stops being the center of the machine. Presence, power, connectivity, and ownership matter more.
The familiar personal computer is organized around a person looking at it. A computer for an AI resident can be organized around staying available, holding state, and acting within permission. It can live quietly in the room without asking for a permanent desk.

The desktop was built around our bodies
The desktop computer puts its most important relationship in the name. It sits on a desk because a person sits at a desk. The monitor faces our eyes. The keyboard and mouse wait for our hands. Its sleep and wake cycles follow our presence.
Those choices are sensible for a human user. They become inherited ceremony when the primary user is software. An agent does not need a monitor to know whether a process finished. It needs the state. It does not need a keyboard to issue a command. It needs a governed action interface.
Removing the monitor is not minimalism for its own sake. It reveals what the machine is for.
The important hardware feature is presence
A temporary cloud session can be useful, and ERIKA is intended to work across multiple computing surfaces. Physical hardware offers a different quality: a specific machine that is present, owned, and available in the place where its user wants it.
That presence can support local services, devices, private files, and work that should not depend on a borrowed laptop staying open. It also creates a comprehensible boundary. One box runs one operating-system instance for one resident.
This does not mean setup can ignore safety. Pairing, account access, network boundaries, approvals, updates, and recovery must be designed with the same care as the enclosure. Simplicity should come from the system carrying complexity, not from pretending the complexity is absent.
Why give an agent its own box
Dedicated hardware turns the agent from a feature on somebody else's device into a resident with a place. The distinction matters for continuity and ownership. Restarting a laptop, closing a tab, or switching an application should not erase the agent's world.
The box is also legible. A person can know which machine holds which agent, disconnect it, move it, replace it, or inspect it. Physical ownership does not solve every governance problem, but it makes the system boundary easier to see than an invisible collection of remote sessions.
The ERIKA computer is our attempt to build that boundary as a real object. Inside it, the ERIKA operating system holds the resident's identity, environment, permissions, and work. The hardware is the body. The booted operating system is the agent.
A monitorless computer is not a computer with something missing. For this user, it is a computer whose shape finally follows its purpose.
