How to set up a mail daemon on an Ubuntu Server running wordpress through Google Apps

I am extremely frustrated. I have tried every blog online that attempts to solve this.

I am trying to get the Wordpress blog admin (support@mysite.com) to send an email to new registrants with information on how to set up their blog. However, with only Wordpress installed, the emails have not been getting through. I tried postfix, ssmtp, and combinations of different settings suggested by various people across the internet for the /etc/postfix/main.cf file.

Someone, please help. I need Wordpress to be able to send mail using (anything but I have been trying postfix) and keep it compatible with Google Apps.

When I first installed postfix, I picked "Internet Site" on the wizard page, but I think I should have picked "Internet site with smarthost", is there a way to go back and pick that one now that it's been installed? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the settings must be saved on the machine somewhere.

I followed this blog's advice, because that's just where I landed first. But in retrospect it feels too simple. Other blogs say I need to install certificates. Is that really necessary?
